Frequently Asked Questions
What are roadworks?
Roadworks refer to construction, maintenance or upgrade activities carried out on roads and related infrastructure. This can include building new roads, resurfacing existing roads, repairing potholes, improving drainage, constructing roundabouts and installing safety features such as barriers and signage. Roadworks are undertaken to improve safety, traffic flow and the long-term durability of transport networks for both public and private use.
Are roadworks different for private roads and public roads?
Yes, roadworks for private roads and public roads often differ in terms of standards, approvals and oversight. Public roadworks are subject to stricter regulatory requirements, inspections and traffic management obligations. Private roadworks may have more flexibility but still need to meet safety and engineering standards. The intended use of the road influences design and construction requirements.
What approvals are required for roadworks?
Approvals for roadworks depend on the location and scope of the project. Public roadworks typically require council or government approval, along with traffic management plans and environmental assessments. Private roadworks may still require permits if they affect public access, drainage or utilities. Obtaining approvals before work begins helps prevent delays and compliance issues.
